10.7.07 U12 XI 79-8 beat Horley 78-5
Outwood edged through to the East Surrey U12 Cup final after an extremely tense, low scoring semi-final away to Horley yesterday. On an unusually sunny July evening, Horley batted first and struggled to score against a parsimonious Outwood attack. All the seamers bowled well, albeit without taking many wickets, and it took the intervention of William Rady's "flight
and guile" and some fine stumpwork from Ashley Middleton to make inroads. As usual the fielding was good with Jonny Howard taking a particularly good catch running in from mid-wicket. After a fine pep talk from the Manager, the boys then collapsed horribly to 27-6. Outwood's tail wagged impressively however, with William Smith and Jonny Howard skillfully holding up an end whilst Ashley Middleton accumulated an impressive 24 at the other. Upon Middleton's demise our final pair (for we only had 10 men) of Jonny Howard and Josh Norman coolly knocked off the remaining seven runs and were promptly mobbed by their delirious team-mates.
The final is scheduled for Tuesday 24th July - venue to be confirmed.
12.6.07 East Surrey League Cup - Reigate 63 all out; Under 12 XI 65-2
Outwood's U12s have hit some serious form and another strong all round performance yesterday set up a comprehensive victory over Reigate Priory in the Cup. Having won the toss, Reigate elected to bat and were soon in trouble against some probing new ball bowling from Connor Cody (3-1-15-2) and Louis Russell-Watts (3-1-4-1). A threatened middle order revival was curtailed by Josh Norman's slow left arm spin (2-0-15-2) and proceedings were cut admirably short by a penetrative burst from Josh Hampson (2.2-0-6-3). Just as impressive as the bowling was the ground fielding and, of six catches offered, all were taken. Chasing a small total can often be tricky, but the boys batted with great composure and knocked off the runs (against a very good bowling side) in 12 overs with Louis Russell-Watts (12 n.o) and Ashley Middleton (15 n.o) bringing the team home.
5.6.07 U12 XI 151-4 (20 overs); Lingfield 42 all out
A much improved performance from the U12s in beating Lingfield. Outwood won the toss and batted first with Alex Milton (25 n.o.) and Matthew Norman (11) reprising their fifty opening partnership of the previous week. Ashley Middleton (26 n.o.), Ryan Greenhalgh (11) and the Outwood middle order then plundered a further hundred or so to leave Lingfield looking to chase the
highest score in the East Surrey U12 Division this season.
A brief coaching vignette on bowling (?) from Chris Middleton worked wonders for the boys' lines in the field and with Lingfield trying to hit quick runs the outfielding was superb. Six Lingfield batsmen succombed to run-outs as last Thursday's fielding practice paid dividends and there were promising bowling performances from Jonny Partner, William Beazley and Alexandro
Zaccarini. Lingfield ended on 42 all out in 12 .2 overs. With Reigate Priory and South Nutfield both losing elsewhere we still have a chance to win this League.
29.5.07 South Nutfield 135-6 (20 overs) beat Outwood 130-4 (20 overs).
A most frustrating defeat as a strong Outwood side failed to apply the basics of bowling and fielding and in conceding 50 extras in 20 overs left themselves too much to do when it came to batting. That they batted so well and came so close to winning only heightened the disappointment. All the bowlers were guilty of bowling too short, especially to the early batsmen, with plenty of wides, no balls and byes adding to the total. Louis Russell-Watts (3-0-17-2), Ryan Greenhalgh (3-0-18-2) and Matthew Norman (3-0-16-2) were the wicket takers. William Rady and Ryan Greenhalgh both held very good catches.
The contrast when we batted was startling - Alex Milton (26 n.o) and Matthew Norman (11) began briskly, putting on 48 in the first five overs, and the good work was continued by Louis Russell-Watts (28 n.o.) who struck the ball with increasing assurance after an early chance. Connor Cody, Ryan Greenhalgh and Josh Hampson all batted unselfishly, but with the rate required increasing, the boys inexperience was exposed and we fell five short. It was an brave and exciting finish to a match which must teach everyone a few cricketing lessons.
Many thanks to all the Mums, Dads, siblings and supporters who turned out in force to back the team. Apologies if I shouted too much!
22.5.07 Selsdon 49 for 9 Under 12 XI 50 for 2
A fairly routine victory over a weak Selsdon team on Tuesday. Selsdon batted first and struggled ( and I mean struggled) to 49-9. Their top scorer got 5 and without the rather generous donation of 38 extras it would all have been over pretty quickly. All Outwood's bowlers did well with the slower ones (William Rady 3-0-5-2, Michael Sheldrake 3-0-7-2 and Josh Norman 2-0-4-1) taking most of the wickets. Outwood were never really in any trouble chasing the runs and Jamie Baker (14no) and Louis Russell-Watts (9no) saw us to 50-2 in 12 overs.
11.5.07 Under 12 XI 69 for 2 (20 Overs) v Horley - match abandoned
Friday's game versus Horley was eventually abandoned as a draw as the persistent drizzle that had dogged the Outwood innings heavied in the early overs of Horley's reply and the their coach's nervousness about damaging the First XI's pitch finally got the better of him. If slow and low is a description often applied to early season wickets, this one was slow, low and sodden and only the occasional full toss arrived with any kind of velocity. In combination with a vast, uncut and watery outfield scoring was, as you might imagine, somewhat difficult. Johnnie Partner (12) and Matthew Norman (26no) struggled gamely and Connor Cody, Charlie Dockery and William Rady all ran intelligently, but 69-2 off 20 overs was a little on the lean side. Fortunately, Horley only faced 2 overs before the rain intervened and everyone retired to the clubhouse to dry off.
