KENT COUNTY VILLAGE UPDATE

1.      Visiting teams will pay a standard charge of £35 per team for teas for all KCVL matches played.

2.      the 2 new balls for 1st XI matches ‘experiment’ in 2007 will continue for all Div 1 & 2 matches for 2008 and thereafter. One new ball prevails for all Div 3, 4 & 5 matches.

3.      a new league handbook has been issued in draft form. There are no changes to playing conditions or the points system but there is extensive wording covering disciplinary procedures, ECB Code of Conduct, Spirit of Cricket, Voluntary Code of Conduct, Umpires Indemnity and ECB Directive on Youth Cricketers.

·         It is recommended that you read these topics, not least because of the strict procedures to be followed, potential player suspensions, financial and points penalties that may result in the hopefully unlikely event that one or more of our players are reported by an Umpire or opposing Captain.

·         We now have Team Sheet cards which we are being encouraged to complete and give to umpires before the match starts. This is in relation to Umpires Indemnity, notable in relation to Youth Cricketers and related guidelines.

·       The handbook is attached in pdf format. We are obliged to display a copy in the pavilion.

4.      on the subject of eligible players, a reminder that they have to be “bona fide members who pay a subscription during the current season”. Penalties can be applied although the league have never followed up on this to date. We were very poor on chasing subs and getting new players signed up last year so we should make greater efforts this year.

5.      the other fundamental change this year relates to match reporting.

·        This now has to be done via the Play-Cricket web site (officially endorsed by the ECB and MCC). As you may be aware, this is a web site (or umbrella of web sites) used by many clubs and many leagues.

·         Every KCVL club will have its own web site within the overall play-cricket web site.

·         Ours was already set up because it has been used by our Junior teams who are linked to their corresponding league web site within the overall play-cricket web site.

·         There is an overall play-cricket KCVL web site to which all KCVL member club web sites are automatically linked.

·       For match reporting this is a  new and untried method for us so there may be some teething problems. It is a very important issue. Failure to submit results by Monday Noon attracts financial penalties. There are other undiscovered and untried facilities within this new web site. All members are encouraged to register on the new web site to be able to view and use the facilities within - click here to reach the new web site

·       The existing KCVL web site (kcvl.co.uk) will be discontinued.

We Have Signed The New National Trust Lease And We Are Now A Company Limited By Guarantee
I am very pleased to announce that at a meeting on Wednesday 25th July 07 the Outwood Cricket Club Committee implemented the resolution of the last AGM to change the status of the club from an unincorporated body to a company limited by guarantee. As part of this process, existing Trustees Adrian Christie and Peter Murray attended the meeting to formally surrender the club’s existing lease with the National Trust in favour of a new fifty year lease which was signed on behalf of the club at the inaugural “board meeting” which took place immediately thereafter.
This is fabulous news for Outwood Cricket Club as we have now safeguarded the long-term future of the club. Thanks to the fantastic efforts of Peter Chapman and Tony Reason who negotiated the new lease on our behalf, our new rent has been fixed at a nominal £1 per annum for the next half a century! As Chairman I would like to take this opportunity to thank them publicly for the tremendous service they have done for us all.
As stated at the AGM, the purpose of the change to a company limited by guarantee was to remove the financial liability of our Trustees and to put in place a framework which would enable us to become a Community Amateur Sports Club and thereby benefit from valuable tax concessions as we undertake our fund-raising drive for the new pavilion. I am pleased to say that Malcolm Cutter has now submitted our application for CASC status to the Inland Revenue.
Malcolm and Adrian have had the onerous task of putting together the paperwork which has enabled us to effect this change. Both have worked very positively with the club’s professional advisor, Rachel Wright of 238 Ltd. Their joint endeavours have made the whole process far less complicated than it might otherwise have been and as Chairman I am very grateful to them all for that.
John Mills is the new Company Secretary and will be formally notifying all members of the new changes in due course. As I am sure you will all appreciate John has an enormous amount of new paperwork to come to terms with.  We all wish him well and would like to thank him for taking on this role.
George Beach
Chairman

12.5.07 Cutter's cuts create a pathway to the pavilion
It seems that the recent winds were sufficient to persuade an extremely large branch of one of the 'conker' trees at the top of the ground to block the track to the pavilion. A keen spectator, looking forward to watching Outwood thrash Withyham in the fresh but sunny conditions, happened upon Captain Cutter with his chainsaw (and his mother - no connection!) valiantly clearing the way. But there was no cricket! Nor was there any cricket when the keen supporter visited Withyham about 30 minutes earlier!

Mike Cleaver completes 15 Peaks Challenge on Saturday 5th May
OCC 15 Peaks.jpg (159198 bytes)Mike completed one of the most testing walking challenges in the UK, known as The Welsh 3000s, in approximately 18 hours. The challenge is to have been at the top of all 15 of the mountains over 3000ft in Wales within the space of 24 hours, without using any form of transport. The length is about 32 miles with a hell of a lot of ups and downs. It’s not easy – it’s a big step up from something like the “Three Peaks Challenge”. It’s very rocky, and both uphill and downhill sections are demanding.

David Rose aboard 'Dramatic Quest' (stable name 'Bobby')

Outing Number 2 - 9th April 2007

Having arrived at Aldington, a miniscule hamlet approx 5 miles south west of Ashford, my trainer and I embarked on walking the course. They had used an aggravator on most of the course to alleviate some of the firmness of the ground. However, it was firm for most of the course. Having debated the pros and cons and the fact there were only four runners it was decided to give it a crack.
For the first time in four attempts I incurred no overweight penalty. Riding at 12 stone meaning my actual weight was 11st 3lbs. I was over 13 stone in Sept 2005. Claude Rains - ask Ponsford.
On the way to the start numerous spectators offered their support for no. 3. I just hoped they had not invested their money on me with the bookmakers (in which case they are as barking as I am ).
Off we started. My immediate reaction was that they setting off too fast but hell, what do I know?!
We jumped the first with no problem bringing up the rear by 4/5 lengths, That's how things stayed for a circuit and a bit with my fellow jumping superbly, not touching a twig.
The last fence down the back straight is an open ditch which again he jumped with aplomb. But at this time I was at the end of my tether with strength being drained from every limb and sinews stretched to painful extremes. As we went round the end turn any remaining strength ebbed away and the next thing I knew I was hitting the ground at approx thirty miles an hour.
I admit that the next twenty minutes is all but a blur. I vaguely recall getting up and walking to a car to take me back to the changing room but I certainly don`t remember the journey. The Doctor examined me and I responded in my usual jokey way - APPARENTLY!.  I soon regained my senses and a bottle of Bollinger aided the celebrations of the furthest I have travelled on my horse to date.
Needless to say my body is not as young as it thought it was. I walked and slept as if I had splints in every limb and other places I dare not mention.
So my ambition to ride and complete a race is still there for the taking. Whether my body, my ambition, my trainer, my horse and my wife will allow me I don`t really know. There is another race at Penshurst Sat 21st April I have earmarked so watch this space.
It would have been easier and safer to have bathed in a tub of baked beans for this pavilion.

5.4.07 Fixture Against Falkland Islands Confirmed for Thursday 12th July
Keith Barham, on receipt of the March 16th edition edition of Penguin News, the weekly Falkland Islands newspaper (he is a regular subscriber) noted that the Falkland Islands are touring this year. He seized the opportunity, picked up the phone and secured the booking.
Newer members may not be aware that he seized a similar opportunity in 1979 we hosted and played against Argentina when they visited England to play in the World Cup.
Argentina and the Falklands - quite a double!
And here's another coincidence: in 1979 an article was written in the Daily Mail by Brian Scovell who is bringing his team, The Woodpeckers, to play on Sunday 6th May. Keith will ask him to attend the Falklands fixture and hopefully he will submit another article.

2007 big pavilion fundraising push to be launched On Saturday 21st April at the junior Academy Open Day with our fundraising “batometer” being unveiled
As we try to secure the legacy of Outwood Cricket for future generations it is most appropriate that we kick off our fundraising year at the Junior Cricket Open Day.

25.3.07 David Rose Reports On His Great Point-to-Point Adventure In Aid Of The Pavilion Fund
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
Just to enlighten you to what happened at approx 2.03 on Sunday. I missed the start and was several lengths behind the other four runners going to the first fence, which we (the horse and I) jumped well all be it slowly. Then he really began racing and flew the second and the third and was catching the others up quite quickly then we came to the fourth with the others only a dozen lengths in front. We were really motoring but within 7/8 yards to the fence he decided that a change of direction was required. Unfortunately his swerve which Phil Bennett would have been proud of, catapulted yours truly into the wing of the fence. I made such a mess of the wing the fence was missed out by the remainder next time round. ` IS THE HORSE OK` I hear you shout, yes he is OK. Apart from being a bit sore, bruised and a very painful thumb so am I, thanking you for asking.
So regrettably I only jumped 3 fences, but thank you for sponsoring me in aid of Outwood C.C. new pavilion. Please send cheques to me or Malcolm Cutter whoever you know best.
Just another thought, I plan to ride again at Aldington, south of Ashford on Easter Monday so if any of you wish to try again to sponsor me for Outwood C.C. new pavilion please don`t let me stop you.
Regards, David

17.3.07 Tony & Wendy Reason Return From The Annapurnas To Claim Their Pavilion Sponsorship Money
reason1.jpg (635532 bytes)We did it, but not without a struggle.
As part of our trip to Nepal, we ventured on a trek from Pokhara around Lake Phewr in the foothills of the Annapurnas. There were 13 in our party and we had 27 - yes, 27 - Sherpas, Guides, Cooks and Porters, who without the benefit of all our modern gear, carried all the equipment and generally looked after us. It was a humbling experience.
reason2.jpg (793181 bytes) We trekked for four days, up to 7,000 feet, through rain and hailstorms; up rocky steps, across rope bridges and down slippery slopes; through forests with wonderful bird life and the occasional orchid and rhododendron; and through remote mountain villages. We slept out in tents with no proper sanitation and it was freezing cold at night.
And did we enjoy it? You bet we did. It was a stunning experience, particularly on days 3 and 4 when the skies cleared and the Annapurnas showed themselves in all their majestic glory. The people in the villages were so welcoming and their hard lives read into their faces which were so full of character.
So for all of you who supported us by making a donation for the Cricket Club Pavilion rebuild fund, we would like to say a big thank you. It was the spur that kept us going when the going got tough.
We will keep the sponsorship fund open until the end of April; so far we have raised nearly £400.

23.2.07 AGM Brings Exciting News Of Pavilion Insurance Settlement
Dream To Become Reality In March 2008?

Those of you who attended the 2006 AGM could have been forgiven for thinking that it was an almost impossible dream. So many unknowns, the insurance claim outstanding and the likelihood of £100,000+ to raise.
By contrast, the February 2007 AGM set the scene for the dream to be transformed into a very achievable reality. The insurance claim has now been settled. We believe we need to add an additional £60,000 to the insurance settlement and hope to contribute at least £22,000 towards the £60,000 target from our existing funds.  We WILL achieve our March 2008 target …..
