Review U12’s Outwood's
U12 side, many of whom were again playing a year above themselves, had another
successful, if ultimately somewhat frustrating, season in 2007. The boys only
lost one East Surrey League game all season, so to come third was a little
disappointing. The main culprit was the weather which washed two games out
completely and forced the abandonment
of another where we were in a promising position. Our only defeat came against
local rivals With
regard to individuals, the team was always stronger when Alex Milton and Ashley
Middleton played, with Alex being forced to retire on each of his three
appearances due to weight of runs (80) and Ashley frightening all the opposition
batsmen with his intimidatingly impressive keeping. Also amongst the runs was
Louis Russell-Watts (68) Matthew Norman (67), Ryan Greenhalgh (49), Connor Cody (48) and Josh Hampson (43). The bowling and fielding was strong all season with Matthew Norman (7), Louis Russell-Watts (7), Michael Sheldrake (5) and Ryan Greenhalgh (5) all amongst the top
ten wicket takers in the league, Connor Cody and Josh Hampson usually too good
to
find an edge and Josh Norman and William Rady too wily to be hit far. William
Rady took more catches than anyone else in the league (often whilst
seeming not to be paying attention)
and Jamie Baker took the catch of the
season in the Cup Final when he dived full length to pluck a full blooded
drive out of the air at a crucial point in the match. Honorable mentions should also go to William Smith and Jonny Howard who won the Cup semi-final against Horley with a nonchalant last wicket stand of 11 when all
seemed lost and to Charlie Dockery for his keeping. The team was admirably led
by Connor Cody.
To choose a Clubman of the year is always difficult, particularly in this year as so many boys contributed so strongly, but, for his steady improvement with bat and ball, and, especially, his never say die attitude, the 2007 award goes to Josh Hampson.
2007 Season Review U9’s
In their first season playing competitive “incredible” cricket in the
East Surrey Colts League (ESCL), our U9 team played its fixtures with much
enthusiasm and energy. Whilst the team had to wait until the end of the season
for their first victory, many of the earlier games could have gone either way so
the league table doesn’t necessarily reflect the effort and commitment of the
players. There were many notable performances throughout the season and team
spirit was excellent, however several players’ consistent performances deserve
a special mention. Pick of the bowlers for their consistency were Eddie Knight,
James Rady, and Ben Staig all of whom are competent batsmen too. Alex Paul and
Ross Budgen did well with both bat and ball. Oliver Briggs and Ross Digby Patel
shared the wicket-keeping duties with both progressing in that role throughout
the season. Ross D-P also showed particular promise with the bat alongside
Oliver Hocken. Last but not least, Henry Whitaker demonstrated good all round
skills with bat and ball, combined with mature captaincy and for those reasons
is awarded U9 clubman of the year 2007. I am indebted to all the parents who kindly managed the team on Saturday
mornings and I very much hope the boys, team manager Chris Knight and the club
can rely on your valuable support again in 2008. For the season ahead, we have
entered a team in the ESCL U10 hard ball league. Matches will generally be on a
Sunday morning (some may be switched to a Saturday if there is a clash with the
U13’s) however the provisional fixtures are shown below. I hope everyone is
looking forward to the season as much as I am! Ian Milton Outwood Academy
