-
BRITAIN
'S OLDEST WORKING WINDMILL

The
mill at Outwood, near Bletchingley, is
Britain
's oldest working windmill. It was built in 1665, the year before the Great Fire
of
London
, by Thomas Budgen, who was a miller of Nutfield.
Outwood
Mill is what is known as a Post Mill, i.e. the whole body of the mill, complete
with its sails and machinery, is balanced on a huge central oak post on which
the whole structure can be turned to face the wind.
